Behind the Work

Pattern is where my work begins. I’m drawn to repetition  - to the way shapes and colors build on one another until a surface feels alive. The natural world provides my imagery, but it’s the process of gathering and layering these elements that brings a painting into focus.

Repetition feels instinctive and meditative. It calms and grounds me, bringing order to visual complexity.

I think of my approach as stylized realism. I study the anatomy and behavior of my subjects so each curve and contour feels true, then heighten what I see through pattern, luminous color, and careful detail. From the fine spines of a lionfish to the mottled bark of a sycamore, I work slowly and precisely, letting observation and invention share the same space.

My years in textile design, book illustration, and painting have shaped how I build an image. I work in layers, mark by mark, until scattered parts begin to connect. I’m always looking for balance — enough detail to feel immersive, enough structure to hold it together.

Recently, I’ve been creating more imagined environments. This move toward fantasy feels like a natural extension of my earlier work. Close observation taught me how to see. Now I find joy in using those same skills to create whimsically imagined compositions.

At heart, my work is still guided by curiosity and delight — by the pleasure of fitting shapes together, adjusting color, and watching a world slowly emerge.
